Sustainability as a Calling
At Nikko Asset Management, our commitment to sustainability is embedded in everything we do. As part of our 60-year history, we have a fundamental commitment to the highest standards both in the way we manage ourselves and in how we approach investing our clients’ money. Nikko AM is proud to have been a signatory to the Principles of Responsible Investing since 2007.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals support the application of this purpose by providing a broad agenda that applies to Nikko AM as an asset manager. We are fully committed to that agenda, and have made significant strides in various SDGs, including #4 Quality Education, #5 Gender Equality and #10 Reduced Inequalities. Within any type of market cycle, we are committed to ensuring there is never a loss of focus on sustainability practices.
Commitment key
We support the UNHCR both financially and via our commitment to the refugee program. We globally support funding for school supplies and textbooks, access to schools, and extracurricular and classroom facilities through the UNHCR Educate A Child program.
We also support local grass roots charitable giving and volunteering, designed to respond to the greatest need identified by employees specific to each of our markets. In addition, Nikko AM contributes to earthquake and other disaster relief efforts by donating a portion of fund management fees and soliciting donations.
Diversity & Inclusion
We are the first Asian asset manager to be signatories to the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles. Firmly committed to diversity, we represent 30 nationalities across nine markets, and have robust support mechanisms in place – including half of employees in Japan taking advantage of flex time. We also operate a Diversity & Inclusion Program, encompassing working groups focused on women, LGBT and disability, populated by employee volunteers engaged in raising awareness and promoting engagement to address the challenges that these groups face.
Nikko AM communicates the challenges faced and contributions from both LGBT and employees living with disability regularly, particularly internally through events and communications for staff. We also provide opportunities for employees to support them – in the case of disabilities, we have, for many years, supported an organization that provides wheelchairs to children in developing countries who would not have access to them otherwise.
Nikko AM also supports the Japan National Wheelchair Rugby Federation, and two of its members are our colleagues. The team took a Bronze at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, then went on to win the wheelchair rugby world championship about two years later – both the medal and the world championship were firsts for wheelchair rugby in Japan. We are proud to support their success.
