Mazda: Aiming Toward a Sustainable and Fulfilled Society
As an automobile manufacturer, the biggest environmental issue is the prevention of global warming.
The multi-solution approach to reduce CO2
In order to globally and fundamentally reduce CO2, it is important to have a “well-to-wheel” perspective which also includes the CO2 emitted during the mining, production, and transportation of energy. The traditional “tank-to-wheel” perspective only covers the CO2 emitted during driving. For example, an electric vehicle does not give off any CO2 during driving, but if the electricity used to power that EV is generated by fossil fuels, then it is emitting CO2 during power generation.
It is important to take the most suitable approach for each region, with consideration to each region’s energy situation, electricity generation structure, and automobile power source adequacy. It is important to have available the power source that is best suited to reduce CO2 in that region, including electrification, and we call this a multi-solution approach.
For areas which use electricity generated by fossil fuels, the best solution would be to combine an excellent internal combustion engine with electrification. Based on the progress of the global energy situation, the combination of internal combustion and electrification technologies will still be dominant worldwide even at 2030. This is why it is important to improve the internal combustion engine. On the other hand, for regions with clean power generation, EVs are the best solution.
The supply of fossil fuels used in internal combustion engines will eventually come to an end. However, liquid fuel is the most efficient source of energy for transportation such as automobiles and airplanes. This is why we are conducting research on the production and use of carbon-neutral, renewable, liquid biofuels. We are focusing on algae because it does not affect our food supply, and we are collaborating with others to push forward open-innovations together with the society.
Haldex has a joint, global program for safety – Safety #1 – whereby safety is a number-one priority. We have zero tolerance for workplace accidents. To achieve our target, we work with safer environments, training and attitude changing. We work according to the motto “If you can’t do it safely, don’t do it.” New measurement methods have been introduced, such as more nuanced measurement of incidents that often serve as a warning sign for more serious accidents. Reinforcing positive behaviours is also important, and showing why all incidents should be reported, no matter how insignificant they seem.
Dealing with traffic accidents and the lack of transportation
To achieve zero casualties from traffic accidents someday, we are developing autonomous driving technology which we call “Mazda Co-Pilot Concept”.
It will not intervene with driving when the driver is driving normally, but once the car detects that there is something wrong with the driver, the vehicle will override driving, avoid dangers, and park the car in place that is safe for both the driver and the surrounding people.
To deal with the ageing and depopulation in provincial cities, and the lack of transportation therein, we will utilize the Co-Pilot Concept, so that the elderly can also relax and travel freely. On top of that, we are aiming to build a “Ride Share System” in which even in the depopulated areas, car owners can help other residents get around. Through this, we would like to contribute to the realization of a fulfilled society in which people support each other.
